Went out for dinner tonight and noticed a homeless woman looking for food through the trash. So I went up to her and invited her to have dinner with me. Before she left, she told me that I made her feel very special, made her feel happy, made her feel noticed while others simply ignored her. While we were eating, she kept apologizing to me, because she felt she was making all the people stare at us. I told her not to worry, it doesn’t matter what others think, but to just enjoy her dinner. After she got up to leave, she came up to me and thanked me again with tears in her eyes. Then she gave me a hug, smiled and walked away. May God bless her, help her and keep her safe.

However in China, it falls on a different day every year. Chinese Valentine’s Day celebrates a love story in Chinese mythology dating all the way back to the Han Dynasty. There are many traditions associated with this festival, some of which are still observed in rural areas. But, in many of China’s cities, these traditions are no longer practiced. Instead most couples celebrate Chinese Valentine’s Day the same way Westerners do on February 14th; with flowers, chocolates, and gifts.

It was a beautiful day here so I went outside to photograph birds again. Turkey Vulture, Bald Eagle, Red-winged Blackbirds, red fox, Black Vulture, Black Vulture and Turkey Vulture, Sandhill Crane, and Eastern Bluebird. The Sandhill Crane was the rarest sighting. I have only seen one at this location one time before. Delaware, USA
How to improve your speaking?? This is for the people who want to communicate in English. I know many might disagree with this, but the results prove my point. This is how I teach my students here in Beijing and they learn to speak with confidence. Forget about grammar!! Grammar is more for the literacy skills of reading and writing, it is not that important for speaking. We learn from hearing and repeating. Why do children speak without grammar rules? Because they hear words and then they repeat the words (with mistakes). With more practice the mistakes get fewer. Grammar is hard, confusing, and in some ways useless. Most students are great at grammar, but that does not help them learn to communicate. Grammar makes you want to give up. Practice listening, imitating and repeating. It takes time, but this method will have you speaking, not thinking about grammar rules you don't need. Spend your time learning to speak, speak, and speak. Follow my moments and practice imitating my articles. You will see that your communication skills will improve.

I got my COVID vaccine this evening. About 5 days ago I scheduled an appointment online for a clinic at a local grocery store. I chose the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, so I only needed to get one dose and two weeks from today I will be considered “fully vaccinated.” The entire process only took about 5 minutes, plus another 15 minutes afterwards where they monitor to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction. As a child my father read books to me at night about great men who scaled the highest peaks in the Himalayas. These stories were filled with mysticism, pain and agony and often times death. From a young age I wanted to travel to Tibet and experience the culture and the people there instead of just reading about it all in books. Tibet changed me and the way I view what is necessary in life and what is actually important. I hope to climb the highest peaks in the Himalayas one day and have outlined some peaks to work up to such an endeavor!

3 Rules for Improving Spoken English Have you been learning English for years but still can’t speak fluently? You are not alone. In fact, spoken English is the hardest aspect of English to learn for most ESL students. But why does this happen? How do most students develop English writing skills faster than speaking skills? How can one improve spoken English fast? Rule #1: You can’t learn spoken English like you learn History or Biology. Subjects like History and Biology can be mastered by learning and memorizing. You will only improve your spoken English by continuous speaking practice. Rule#2: Find a teacher that will act like a Conversation Partner, not a professor! Most English teachers are great at teaching grammar and vocabulary. However, you will never become fluent in English just by studying grammar and memorizing vocabulary words. The secret to improving spoken English is practicing speaking a lot. For this to happen, your English teacher should act like a Conversation Partner. Rule#3: Focus on Fluency, not Grammar! Tired of memorizing endless grammar rules? Stop doing this immediately! Studies show that learning too much grammar actually hurts your ability to speak English fluently. The reason is English grammar has far too many rules and your brain simply can’t memorize and use all of those rules in real conversations. Practice, practice, practice speaking!

Four years ago today I moved to Delaware for the first time to start a job as a bird biologist. Before that I was unemployed for a few years, living with my parents, and generally without a purpose in life. I wanted to work but I had a lot of anxiety and depression that kept me from taking the steps I needed. The job gave me purpose and showed me that I was able to survive away from my family. Four years later I’m in a much better place in my life. I have a better social life and I’m much more comfortable with myself. I know there are many others in the world today who are in the same place that I was four years ago. My advice is to take every opportunity that you can to take small steps in the right direction and before you know it everything will be changing for the better. The photos are me four years ago versus me today.

4 August 2020 Many people were killed/injured/or have not been found due to the Lebanese explosion. It is saddening to know that they had to go through this, I can't imagine what this could have been like in their point of view; They were living a normal everyday life not knowing what was about to happen next. The explosion has also caused many people to be homeless; These people were strong and brave for going through something like this, it is absolutely unbelievable. We must pray for the missing people to be found, we must pray for the ones who have died and wish for their families to heal soon, we must pray for the ones who are now homeless, we must pray for the injured, we must pray for the firemen/police/paramedics, we must pray for everyone in general. They deserve all the kindness in the world right now, especially the ones who did survive because for all we know they will be traumatized by this terrible tragedy; They are not alone, we are here to help them get through this.❤✊🏼

Currently there are three brands of coronavirus vaccines available in the US.(Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson) Most of the vaccines require two doses about a month apart. The golden poppy flower is California’s state flower and it is one of my favorite. The bright orange hues reminds me of spring and summer. It’s bright but delicate. One side of California is all coastal and you can find these flowers growing widely. When the sun hits it you can say shades of the bright yellow sun in it. It grows so delicately on a stem and when the wind is just right you can see the flowers sway back and forth in a rhythmic motion. These flowers remind me of home.

Today is my grandma’s 85th birthday. I just called her to wish her a happy birthday. She told me that someone organized a parade of cars to drive past her house and honk their horns to celebrate since she can’t leave the house due to the current situation. Today I went to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. It is over 1,000 acres of flowers, fountains, forests, and fields. It was my first time there but I hope to visit many times since it is only a 15 minute drive from my current home.
Today in Beijing, we had an amazing English Corner outdoor activity at Olympic Forest Park! More than 25 people were able to attend! We enjoyed great weather, interesting conversations, delicious snacks, games, singing and a few people even danced. I’m looking forward to our next English Corner activity! Today, my dad and I volunteered at the Worlds End Ultramarathon at Worlds End State Park in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, USA. Some runners were running 50 kilometers and others were running the full 100 kilometers! Our job was to record which runners passed through our aid station and to radio that information back to headquarters. This park is only about 45 minutes from my house and is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been!

Today I went to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge to see a rare bird that was found there this morning. It is a Roseate Spoonbill, which is normally found only in the southern USA such as Florida and Texas. This one apparently decided to wander north. Delaware, USA
On Sunday I took a trip to Virginia and visited the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch where they count migrating hawks, just like my job in Delaware. I also met one of my HelloTalk language partners in person for the first time and had a nice afternoon exploring Charlottesville with her.

The first picture is my sister. She is working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week at her hospital. Many doctors and nurses have to work overtime due to what's happening in the US. My sister can't live in her house with her family. So she's been living in her other house alone. She's always been strong but she probably won't see any family for another long or two. The last time I returned to America to see my family and friends was 2019. During that trip, I was thrilled to visit the farm that I grew up on as a child. I have many wonderful memories of this red barn. I had lots of fun running around this farm with my two brothers and my sister. I was happy to see that the new owners of this farm still take very good care of it. This farm is forever etched in my memory.

Yesterday, I received some very sad news from my sister in America. My dog Zoey, my best friend in the whole world, passed away. It’s extremely difficult for me because I wasn’t able to return to America this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I knew she was getting old and I had hoped to see her at least one more time. Now.....I have many wonderful memories of our time together.

How To Improve Your English Vocabulary One very common problem for English learners is learning new vocabulary words and then forgetting them – so when you want to use a particular word in conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. It’s so annoying, and so common! Does this ever happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and memorizing the words! But this is NOT effective (unless you naturally have an excellent memory!)  However, there is something you can do to learn English vocabulary and remember the words successfully, and that is: Write the new word in a “vocabulary notebook”! Every time you learn a new word – for example, from an article, from a book, or from an English lesson – first, write it down in your “vocabulary notebook”. The action of writing is more ACTIVE than just reading a definition. If you don’t have a vocabulary notebook, I highly recommend that you get one ASAP!  You should write in your vocabulary notebook: ▪ The word ▪ The definition in English (or translation) ▪ 1 example sentence from the article or dictionary ▪ 1 example sentence that YOU create Imagine you just learned the word “generous.” Write in your vocabulary notebook: 1.) WORD: generous (adjective) 2.) DEFINITION: when a person gives time / money freely 3.) EXAMPLE 1 (from the article): “Thanks for paying for my dinner. You’re very generous.” 4.) EXAMPLE 2 (my example): “My brother is very generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends.” It’s best if your example sentence is true or relevant to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new vocabulary word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again, because it’s important to review after some time has passed and then try to add one more example sentence using the new word. A Few Tips for Learning English Vocabulary 1. Read whenever possible. Whether it is a novel or a magazine or something else, pay close attention to anything with writing on it. The more you are exposed to words, the more you will learn. Do not skip unfamiliar words: if you don’t know what a word means, look it up and make a note of it. 2. Write down new words. Writing the actual word with the meaning will help you remember it. Keep a diary so that you will have a collection of all your new words that you can easily revise when needed. 3. Vocally practice new words. Have a “word of the day” and use your newly learnt word throughout the day so you will learn to use it in context and not forget it quickly. 4. Visually remembering words is very helpful. Try writing words on small sticky notes and adding them to items around the house so that you will associate new words with their relevant images. 5. Play word games online and look up the meanings of new words as you encounter them. “Scrabble” is a wonderful word game. Try it sometime. 6. Use new words regularly so that you don’t forget them. 7. Talk with a native speaker. The best way to gain confidence in speaking any language is by talking to native speakers. 8.) Don’t worry about making mistakes! We all make mistakes and we learn from our mistakes!

The significance of long hair in Native American culture is amazing. There are many teachings and practices in their tribal cultures that are significant to who they are as Native people. One of many things important to their cultural identity is, their hair. Their hair is considered to be sacred and significant to who they are as an individual, family, and community. In many tribes, it is believed that a person’s long hair represents a strong cultural identity. This strong cultural identity promotes self-esteem, self-respect, a sense of belonging, and a healthy sense of pride. Touching someone’s hair without permission is disrespectful in the Native community. This is not something to take personal; it’s their way of protecting themselves from someone they know nothing about.

In England some private gardens are open to the public. Coton Manor is a botanical garden near us and we visit it every year around this time to see the wonderful display of flowers . The gardens are immaculately maintained and a joy to wander around. The flamingo 🦩 is a happy resident.
