Illustration

We use simple, flat shapes and symbols to easily communicate with a global user base who speak different languages. The icons are used as solid, single colored navigation aids in light mode or dark mode interfaces. Icons can also be presented as gradients of secondary colors for more visual emphasis.

In addition to our characters (Handy and Talky), we use minimalistic illustrations based on the theme of communication (hand gestures and speech bubbles) and culture (travel, geography etc.) themed graphics.

Shapes
All our shapes are constructed with rounded corners. Shapes with sharp corners do not fit in the HelloTalk brand
Simplicity
Use simple shapes to stay in line with our brand. We recommend simplifying graphical elements as much as possible to avoid unnecessary complexity
Geometric Operations
Use geometric operations such as merge, subtract, and intersect to combine basic geometric shapes (circles, rectangles, etc.). Not only does this reduce complexity, but also creates unified and recognizable brand components.
Illustration
Illustrations are how we visually present our brand to the world. Our illustrative style uses simple, flat shapes based on two large themes of communication and culture. These illustrations are the graphical representation of Talk to the World - where language provides the key to exploring and understanding the world. Illustrations are commonly used in external channels such as marketing websites, landing pages, and company swag.

Iconography

Icons are universal symbols that assist users with in-app navigation. These functional visual elements capture complex ideas and are the visual signage within our applications. The symbols are minimalist in their detail but provide enough form to convey big ideas.

Characters
Handy and Talky are the main cast at HelloTalk. They can be used both in-app and externally. Refer to the Character page for more information on how to use the characters to create a unique brand interaction for our users.
Photography

Similar to the people who use our products, we use photographs of people from a wide range of backgrounds. These diverse profiles often feature warm or smiling expressions that fit with our brand personality of welcoming and cultured.


Photography can be combined with illustration and our secondary colors to create festive content for both in-app and external campaigns (e.g. Chinese New Year, Christmas).
