誰得(だれとく)
As far as I remember, this
is a relatively newly made expression. 2, 3 or so years ago, I guess. This is abbreviation of “誰が得するんだよ?(だれ が とく するんだよ)” . I’d translate it as “who gets benefits from it?”
You can use it when something is done but there seems no benefit for it, or rather, there could be a loss for people around it.
e.g.
A: I’ve invented these super shoes which allow you to float in the air.
B: Oh cool! What can I do with them?
A: You can walk one quarter of an inch above the ground for 3 seconds at most.
B: What? How much have you spent for it?
A: Guess what? only 10 million dollars. I sold my car, house... Yeah, pretty much all I had.
B: それ誰得?
Hahaha, Sorry, I couldn’t come up with any good examples but I hope you can get the nuance. lol😁
