Hello ☺🌸

I am interested in dining etiquette

... (Are you?😅)

So, a friend told me not to hold chopsticks from the centre, but to hold them from near the top end. He said it is more sophisticated (thank you!).

But last night, the Master at a local izakaya told me don't even bother with chopsticks for sashimi. He said it is not embarrassing and years ago, people used their hands.

Chopsticks should not be placed on top of a bowl like they are in this photo, right? This is bad manners?

Lastly: unfortunately, Google Translate did not work properly last night. Screenshot attached... Luckily, Master found it amusing. But the mistake was very embarrassing. We have a word, "peckish", which means something like, "a little hungry". Is there an equivalent in Japanese?

When you place chopsticks on top of a bowl like they are in the first photo, it means you had enough so you shouldn’t if you didn’t finish yet.

where to hold chopsticks: probably doesn't matter so much. you just look around while eating with Japanese people and you'd find how different they all are. although you might wanna watch out for crossing chopsticks, which is still okay because many Japanese do that, too. chopsticks on bowls: it is okay, but if the restaurant has a holder (a little piece of something which has a dence? in the middle), you want to use it instead. pekish: never heard of it before, but from your explanation, i suppose it could be 小腹が減る (こばらがへる

We often use it’s wrapping paper instead of chopsticks rest if we concern about. But what the master said is right.

https://youtu.be/CAOxNkUDRJ0

@Naruto ナルト Thank you, and funny you say that, I do find salad is much easier to eat using chopsticks than a fork. But for other dishes that need cutting, like schnitzel, a knife is preferable...

You shouldn't place chopsticks on ……like the photo formally. And It's bad to point the tip of the chopsticks towards person who you are eating with.
