My heart sinks a little every time someone on this app starts

asking where am I from.

It's not a good ice breaker when there is a flag right next to my face. 😂

@light When you sign up for hellotalk. It doesn't ask you to select where are you studying or where have you migrated from. When people use the system like this they are abusing it. Simple as that.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@Jason Yeah it's takes some getting used to they have a kind of racism I thought belonged to a past generation and many of them think nothing is wrong with it at all. Except when they are on the receiving end. Then it's not nice.
  • arjuna 白胜龙

@Thomas I can relate to this statement. have you lived in China?
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@arjuna 白胜龙 Don't feed the trolls bro.
  • arjuna 白胜龙

@Jade I usually look on a person's page for something I can connect with, give them a compliment. If they respond with interest using English or Chinese I'm happy. If it's an extremely short textbook like response. I tend to leave them alone. Lol. . . Even in their mother tongue these people have nothing to say.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@Kelly Oh I don't think this one is bad, I like to know my Chinese friends birth names. I also like knowing why they picked the western names they use.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@CHSX It's definitely a factor . . .if someone ask at the start of the conversation. It usually where I end the conversation. Lol.
  • CHSX

I thought your heart sinks because you've realized you are encountering another idiot
  • Kelly

People here also ask me: what's your name? 😂
  • Jade

I’m not a good ice breaker. But I won’t ask where are u from when there’s a flag in the photo 😂
  • Jake the Snake of Kent

@人弃我取 No you've not for a moment come across as being ignorant. It's a pleasure to talk with you. Can't say that for many others on here. 😂
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@人弃我取 You know here quite well. I recall the first time we spoke. 👍🏾 Top guy.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@人弃我取 That's exactly what it is. . . But there is too many people in here to have to deal with the ignorance all the time 😂
  • 人弃我取

    I know it's wrong.in Britain.there are various accent.
  • 人弃我取

I think maybe u just follow a local British accent.but most of Chinese are not familiar, there are some stereotype about black people accent.such if you are black native speaker.u are supposed to speak with America general accent or African American accent or received pronunciation.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@人弃我取 I don't believe any do. Even the ones that tell me I'm from Africa. However just as you are trying to move me towards considering their circumstances and experiences. Surely they should be able to do the same?
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@Jake the Snake of Kent LMAO mate I didn't realise you was from Harrow 😂. You've got the banter I'll give you that.
  • 人弃我取

some of the Chinese people learn the rigid greeting sentence from the book, maybe they have no offense meanings
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@人弃我取 Do you think using this example validates people not using their own discretion, when wondering what to say? Lol There is a lot of people who have tried to tell me I'm not British because I don't speak received pronunciation which is spoke by only 2% of the population and because I don't have white skin. I'd rather be greeted by a wall of Chinese text with the person expressing them selves perfectly and then moving forward from there. Then another person ask me where I'm from, when there is a flag by my picture. I've been here 2 years now spoke to lots of people, it's too much 😂
  • Jake the Snake of Kent

@Thomas never heard of them... sounds cold up there 😉
  • Jake the Snake of Kent

  • 人弃我取

A Chinese went abroad.one day he was injured on the road.a car hit him.a pedestrian ask him.how are u?hi answer.fine.thanks.couse we learn that from the book.thats the only right answer from Chinese English exam multiple choice question😄i guess he learn from the book where are u from.every Chinese student learned that before from the very beginning
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

    @Daniel.Wong123 mhmm 😂
  • Daniel.Wong123

@Thomas I got you. That's a really annoying shit question.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@Daniel.Wong123 Daniel when there is a flag, asking where are you from can make you look extremely ignorant. It is also when you talk to the ignorant majorities in this country, some will ask "Where are you from" knowing you are British but wanting you to say "Africa". Which really should be a different question altogether as I've never step foot on the continent in my life. If you look at the back on forth with Flora you may see how she seemingly misunderstood Jake to be doing just that.
  • Daniel.Wong123

Actually I would start a conversation with new friend by the question "where r u from".Maybe this exactly is cultural variation. In China, people get to know each other by information exchanges,so western people probably feels curious about this. I guess praising the other people is a better way isn't it?😊On this app you will meet many different culture background people, so just relax and talking with kindness and confidence would make more friends I think.
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@Flora Yes ignorant people. . . Have no idea who you are quoting.
  • Flora

@Thomas people like me 🤔 I was quoting from Mr Banterbury😅
  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

  • Ian

  • Flora

@Thomas he knows exactly where Blackpool is. he's asking you "where are you really from?". I get that a lot too.
  • Jake the Snake of Kent

    @Thomas we have a ‘north’?
  • Soaring bird

  • Thomas Lifetime VIP

@MERCER ALEX Don't do that, you'll drown if we have an interesting discussion. 😉😂
