Idiom of the Day

“Pulling rank”

When you “pull rank,” you are

using your authority or using your superior position to overtake someone else’s position. Maybe you are a manager, and you must “pull rank” on an employee who maybe is not doing their job properly. You take over the task and give them a secondary task instead. Sometimes we can joke and “pull rank” and get a bigger slice of cake or move ahead in line. But in general, it is usually not a good idea to “pull rank” unless it is necessary.

@Kris you did very well! I am proud of you. 😊 I want to share this with you and hope that you do not take this a bad way. Asians especially have a very difficult time pronouncing our “R” sounds. I found this video and hope that maybe it will help you if you want to practice this sound more. https://youtu.be/5F-qKn_x59I

@Touyi Very nice. I can tell by your accent that someone is teaching you British English - you have a mixture of a Chinese and British accent. 😊 You have a lot of confidence in your English and are doing well. But your accent combined with quick speaking may find it difficult for foreigners to understand you who also know English. As a native speaker, I understand you well. But for others, you may need to slow down your speech.

@fatima make sure to not rush your “L” sounds. Take the time to fully express the word and not rush it. Pull. Rank. Take a pause, or people may confuse your words as you blur the “L” sound with the “R” sound together.

@Ming when you say “pull rank,” try to pause between the words a little better. Your accent combined with speaking too fast makes it sound like you are saying “pouring” like you are pouring water out of a jar. Otherwise you did very well!

@Nathan this is said very well. Take time to pause between “pull” and “rank.” I know for many Asians that this is a very difficult thing to say. If you say it too quickly, it will sound like “pour rank.” If you pause slightly though, it will sound better. At the very end of your voice message, “pull rank” sounded very good.

@HYEMIN CHO this is good! You speak quickly, which means you have some good confidence with your speech. When you say “pull rank,” make sure you pause just a little more between the words or it will sound like “pour rank.” Your “L” sound is good, but if you say it too quickly, it is lost with the speed of your voice. Otherwise, you do a great job! Your English is very good!

@Laetitia This was very well said. The words are pronounced correctly. Maybe you were just nervous or perhaps it was small text and hard to read, but you can tell you are stumbling on a few words. This is sometimes normal when reading something new for the first time. I simply ask that you ask yourself - Did I really stumble? Or do I need help pronouncing some of these words fluidly and quickly? French and English are very closely related. Half of the English language comes from root words in French. You will have a much easier time with these exercises than others, but it is still difficult. 😊
