A few helpful tips...

Having been using the HelloTalk app for

a few years now, I have seen many new members come and then leave after a few weeks, presumably frustrated.
The following are my personal recommendations on how to get more out of this app.

PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE JUST MY SUGGESTIONS, OTHERS MAY DISAGREE!

Assuming you are a non-English speaker attempting to improve your English, you should realize that there are many more non-English speakers trying to learn English than vice versa.
If you wish to increase your chances of finding someone to help you, I suggest the following:

1️⃣Write your Chinese name in English or find an English name. This will make it easier for English speakers to remember who you are.

2️⃣Upload a pleasant picture of yourself looking friendly. (Personally I find the cat/bunny/dog face pics many younger people upload very silly, but that's just my opinion).

3️⃣Complete your self introduction (much better in English or with a translation). Include something interesting about yourself, that will encourage people to take an interest in you.

4️⃣Upload some interesting pics as moments showing people something about your life, personality or interests.

    5. Try to say something interesting. Don't just post a picture of what you had for lunch. 6. When talking to someone ask them questions, don't expect them to do all the work. 7. Write more than one word answers.

Interesting #1 there as I’ve seen several posts from native English speakers on here saying how they find it odd that many Chinese people “give themselves English names”. I’m not siding either as this is completely a personal preference, but it’s interesting to see thoughts from both sides. Thanks for sharing the tips!
