Saying you need native is like you need christ people by birth to tell people about Christianity. Anyone can know Christianity by reading Bible, you don't need to be Cristian to know Christianity. Christ was jew by birth. Is today Christians are jews? Ofcourse not. You don't need to be native to teach a language. You just need to be expert. Some foreign English Teachers are even better than the native English teachers.

@Chloe exactly. Teaching a language is a different thing. That's why teaching degrees exist. However, I don't think Hellotalk cares for that. I don't think they want a strict/very specific educational background or whatnot
  • Cristale 2020.12.02 20:43

@Ahmad Khan yh, because I was wondering. What if you're proficient in english but it's not your native language or L1. Can't that work too? I mean English is so widely spoken that sometimes I think it's difficult to define "a native speaker" of English. When people think of native English speakers, it's always the US, UK or Australia. But English is wayyy more than that. If it was a language that's spoken at one place like Japanese, Korean, etc then it makes sense to define them as native speakers because they are the only ones speaking the language.

@Chloe to be frank, many Americans who do not have adequate skills go to Asia or abroad to teach English because there are little to no certifications required. So what happens is that they unfortunately get taught wrong information from someone that couldn’t become a teacher here in the US. Arrogance and looking down on other cultures is unfortunately common in the US as well, which explain the behavior you’re talking about. Although, not all Americans are like that :p

It seems pretty clear to me. If you are interested, I’m sure they will give you an idea of what you might be paid before you commit. Just because they are asking, on this occasion, for English teachers doesn’t mean that they won’t be asking for teachers of other languages later on. With schemes like this I think it is sensible to start off with the most in-demand language to see how it goes. I disagree with the belief that generally, native English speakers do not understand the complexities of English grammar. Serious language learners have to learn the mechanics of their own grammar before they can process and assimilate rules in their target language, it is essential if a learner wants to progress beyond beginner level.

@Chloe Lol! America belongs to Amerindians, like New Zealand Belongs to Maori’s. American doesn’t belongs to neither white or black. All these white and black people came from neighbouring countrie. If you ask any black guy, they have ancestors from African country and if you ask a white guy, they have ancestors from some european countries. (This was reply by a guy ) I agree with you without degree +experience one should not teach ( applies to natives speakers too)

Mmm only native English people, strange! But it should be interesting even though I don't think you can earn a living with that. And some more explenation about it should be good for us, like your proposal per hour. Sharing our experiences about learning a language and maybe teach them would be nice! 😊
  • Chloe 2020.12.02 13:35

@Sania 사니아 im telling you. Americans happen to be the rudest out of all english native speakers here, yet they are speaking the most spoken language out of all english natives (spoken - not formal grammatically correct language). It is being proven by linguists all over the world that they speak very spoken incorrect language sometimes.
  • Chloe 2020.12.02 13:33

    ET
    PT

@ペーター 베드로 a lot of native english people speak grammatically incorrect language too. I think anyone can teach a language if they have proper paperwork to prove their levels. Being a native does not prove your knowledge in a language nor the the actual level in that language. A lot of natives do not even understand half the vocabulary in their own language, especially when it comes to C1 or C2 level. I am native estonian but i would never teach estonian because i do not know grammar fully nor how correct some sentence is. We are born to speak it, not teach it. To teach a language, you must have certification to prove your ability.
