Idiom of the Day:

Know the ropes (or learning the ropes)

If

you “know the ropes,” it means that you know what you are doing. You are skilled and capable of performing the task at hand. You can also be “learning the ropes,” which means you are training to understand a job or a task. The idiom’s origin comes from sailors learning which ropes do what on a ship quite literally. Once they “know the ropes,” they have a solid understanding of how to sail a ship and navigate in open waters.
