Invictus by William Ernest Henley.

Out of the night that covers

me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

What is bludgeoning? Thank you for sharing. The poem made me think.

@Mary To bludgeon something means to beat (hit) it, typically with a blunt object. In the context of the poem the author says that no matter how much chance (fate) has bludgeoned them and made their head bloody, they have not given up to it. This is the basic theme of the poem, about believing in yourself, taking control of your destiny, and never giving up.

@Mary I selected the poem because I think it's a good one to start the new year with. Also, I have always considered the stag and it's antlers to be a great symbol of pride and strength.

@malvina ॐ Wow, thank you Malvina! The Russian title for the poem seems to translate to Unconquerable! 😎
