Thought of the Day || 今日の思考... 🤔

Is it possible to have a truly original thought?
One outside the of framework and constraints of language?
If you did, would you be able to express it to others?

I wrote in an earlier moment that learning new languages could expand our minds and set us free.
I still think that's true... to an extent.

Ultimately, I feel that language is like a walled garden, which allows us all the benefits of communication, as long as we stay within its boundaries.

Acquiring new words and languages gives us access to new gardens and extends the boundaries.
Yet, even if you learned all the languages in the world, eventually you will hit the final wall.

    Great and deep insight I agree Let's say; if we learn four or five languages, that exercise will enable us to see the world and society from a different angle Nevertheless, that may not be the ultimate way to have a new understanding. It can only colonize us with a new language and culture.

    @ His theory of 'Universal Grammar'? As far as I understand it, he proposes that the desire to categorise things, and in turn form language is innate to humanity. (though like you, I've only dipped my toe into his work) I'm wondering about the areas that language doesn't quite cover. 🤔

    @Richard 리차드 Yes, we're on the same page. I think language (and acquisition of new language) can be a great vehicle for our 'journey of understanding'. However, I suspect there's a limit to how far it can take us. 'The word 'colonize' often has negative connotations. Do you think there can be a negative aspect to learning new languages? 🤔

    @Benedict But if the technology allowed us to tell our mind to other people like telepathy, our lives would be boring and all kind of art would be declined. So maybe the limitation of words humanizes us.

    @Benedict I would say that there are no negative aspects to learning new languages. Nevertheless, if I am required to find something, it may not be preferable for a certain nation to manage its ideology. Let's say; North Korea has been removed all the information from foreign countries to make their citizens unaware of other possibilities. If their people started to learn English and Western culture, it will be pretty tough for their government to manage people's ideas. Language and culture are always intertwined with each other.

    @ Oh, I certainly agree that neuroscience is the next major frontier of discovery. 💯 I've read about them showing colours to people with different mother tongues and monitoring their brain activity. Those studies suggest the language we speak actively structures our cognitive patterns. 🧠✨ However, I'm not sure if science can ever replace the role of a philosopher. I feel there's a certain X-factor to humanity, that raw data and science alone just can't adequately cover. 🐵

    @Aomame We are on the same wavelength. ✨ When I was wondering to myself how I could go beyond words, the first thing I thought of was music and art. I've thought the same thing about telepathy too. 😄
