*** I was confused at first about why this sentence isn't '거실 안에' because those things are IN the living room, but I found out it's because of Korean housing architecture. Generally the 거실 does not have any doors/entrance so technically the objects are not "in" it.

    Well good point, so we use 거실에 almostly, instead 거실"안"에.

    Mom is in the kitchen. Mom is in the bed room. Mom is in the bathroom. 엄마는 주방/침실/화장실에 있습니다. Koreans do use ~에 instead of ~안에 as the meaning of 'in'. We use ~안에, when want to say something or someone is inside not outside. I hope this helps you learn Korean😊

    Technically you may use it as 안에, but people tend to use 에 only. I think it's beacause 에 covers 안에, 위에, 밑에, 앞에 or 뒤에. But when it should be described more specifically, then you can use 안에 and etc...
