Idiom of the Day

“Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”

This

idiom is a wise warning to others to use common sense. If you “bite the hand that feeds you,” you are hurting someone who is trying to help you. So, the person helping you will now stop because you hurt them. This expression is commonly stated about your boss at work, who has the power to fire you from your job. “The boss is a jerk, but do not bite the hand that feeds you.”

‏‪Who said Don't bite the hand that feeds you?‬ ‏‪One of the first print uses of this phrase was by political writer Edmund Burke in the 1700s: Having looked to government for bread, on the first scarcity they will turn and bite the hand that fed them.‬

Edmund Burke Burke was a proponent of underpinning virtues with manners in society and of the importance of religious institutions for the moral stability and good of the state.[3] These views were expressed in his A Vindication of Natural Society. He criticised the actions of the British government towards the American colonies, including its taxation policies. Burke also supported the rights of the colonists to resist metropolitan authority, although he opposed the attempt to achieve independence. He is remembered for his support for Catholic emancipation, the impeachment of Warren Hastings from the East India Company, and his staunch opposition to the French Revolution

The war song, "Don't Bite the Hand That's Feeding You," was aimed at convincing immigrants of the importance of staying loyal to the United States during World War I. The song was composed by Jimmie Morgan and the lyrics were written by Thomas Hoier. The piece was published in New York in 1915 by Leo Feist.
