Idiom of the Day

“Jump through hoops”

“Jumping through hoops

” is a circus term when animals literally jump through hoops for the audience’s entertainment. The meaning has transformed in English into performing extra steps in a process that is generally seen as a waste of time. For example, at work you may have to “jump through hoops” by filling out a report or paperwork that is redundant, but you must do them in order to get hired. Usually these unnecessary tasks are required by law or company policy, and they often do not make sense.

@abier Yes it does. You could also exchange this with the idiom “red tape.”

@Hana Masoudi You can joint the business profession - or any - and still encounter “jumping through hoops.” Even at my school, we have these kinds of situations happening. This is a figure of speech, but happens often here in the US. We are a very legalistic country. So many times we are bogged down by rules and regulations.

هل تقصد بهذه العبارة أن تقوم بمهام، مثلا، في العمل لا تدخل في إطار تخصصك المهني، فتقوم بتلك المهام فقط لأنها أوامر يجب عليك تنفيذها وإلا ستسببك لك مشاكل مع الآخرين. حاولت أن أترجم ما فهمته من النص. هل ما قلت صحيح؟
