Idiom of the Day:

“Wild goose chase”

If someone takes on a

pointless endeavor without getting any results, we will say they “went on a wild goose chase.” Maybe you drove around the city trying to buy a special present but the stores did not have the item. Maybe a disgruntled coworker is trying to get you fired by trying to find evidence that you are not a good employee but they can’t find any. These would be examples of “wild goose chases.”

@Scott Cecil Allen Thanks for you pay attention to listen to everyone’s voice. It’s time consuming. I have been insisting on learning English everyday for 4 years, but I still can’t speak fluently.

@Judy perfect! And thank you for sharing your Chinese version. Loosely translated, what does your version say? Is it still chasing a goose, or something else?

@Céci in addition... You also don’t realize that you are on a wild goose chase until it is too late. You think that your task will be accomplished in the midst of your efforts in the moment. But only afterwards after a lot of effort do you realize you wasted your time.

@Céci no. With your idiom, there is still a very small chance of finding what you are looking for. With a wild goose chase, it is completely hopeless and an utter waste of time.
  • Céci

Scott Cecil Allen, Is it like saying: try to find a needle in a haystack?
