The subtle art of translating book titles 📚

So far, I read this

book in English and in Russian.
And they are like night and day, as you can probably tell just by looking at the covers
💩🧘🏻‍♀️

But why?! Don’t tell me that the Russian public can’t deal with foul language.

And what’s up with two different titles in Spanish? Latin America vs Spain, is it?

    Los 2 de español son muy parecidos. Las 2 formas se usan aca en Colombia. La palabra "mierda" se toma como una grosería en nuestro país, mientras que la palabra"carajo" es mas sutil y de tono mas bajo, menos fuerte. Seguramente el de la palabra mierda se vendería más rápido aca, especialmente entre los jóvenes.

    @Maryna, да это слово на f* уже давно перестало быть матом, и спокойно используется постоянно, как если бы оно было просто "черт побери!" 😁

    @Maryna_Rus_Eng Переводчики привносят своё видение. В какой степени, определяет автор/правообладатели, издательства. Насколько обязателен трехэтажный мат в названии книги - вопрос. В этом случае, видимо, совместно решили, что от такого изменения перевод не пострадал. В общем, как всегда, всё очень индивидуально. :)

    @nadsol @Yuliya @Stranger @Перевод, безусловно, хороший. Но он звучит, как будто отличник пересказывает то, что написал грубиян трёхэтажным матом:) Нужен ли такой перевод изначально?

    Шикарно переведено на русский! Абсолютно ёмко и точно передаёт суть названия. Я бы долго ломала голову об адекватном и хлестком переводе. Переводчик - настоящий профессионал! Really!

    @Maryna_Rus_Eng Yes,I saw that book in Russian in our local book shop.But there's no interesting to me in such a book.I'd rather buy a classic novel.😊

    В Україні склалась така практика, що назви книжок та фільмів майже ніколи не перекладаються дослівно. При перекладі, як правило, стараються передати скоріше суть (дух), а не зміст твору. І на мій погляд, досить часто це виправдано, бо враховує особливості менталітету різних народів.

    It's not the same either in Polish. If I have an option to read e.g. Russian books in English or Polish it's always Polish, not because of me feeling more comfortable reading in my mother tongue but because of translation.

    @Maryna_Rus_Eng Yeah both are similar, and transmit the same idea, both are used in the same context. For example: Fuc* off / Vete a la mier** / Vete al Caraj* the three phrases mean the same thing! Bad Words lmao😂

    Littéralement le mot foutre veut dire la même chose que fuck en anglais, "s'en foutre" est une expression qui veut dire : ne pas se sentir du tout concerné par quelque chose !

    The portuguese title is very clever

    In Arabic it's totally different no bad words at all ! And yes most of Arabs would not buy the book if it contains foul language. It's a cultural thing I guess. PS: I've the book in French and English and it's pretty similar, but I saw it in my friend house in Arabic and it's little bit different.

    The difference between Spain and Latin America translation is the use of the "bad word" Mierd* or Caraj* at the end of the title, both using their own slang

    I've also read the book in english. Nice one. However the italian title is totally wrong, it sounds like "the subtle art of doing whatever the f*** you want" which conveys a totally different message. Better translation would have been "la sottile arte dello stica**i"
