Formality in English:
shorter = less formal
longer = more formal
Even to close friends, we rarely make demands. Requests should always be phrased as questions.
Example: (give me water)
1. Water.
2. Give me water.
3. Give me some water.
4. Give me some water please.
5. Could I have some water?
6. Could you please give me some water?
7. Could I please have a cup of water?
8. Sorry, could I ask you for a cup of water?
Notice, even with "please" the demand is not very polite. Try to always ask as a question.
So please, no more "teach me English, please."😊
