In Indian Hindu culture all women wear jewellery. I'm part of a small community that only wears gold but I don't think it looks pretty and wear white gold instead. If I didn't wear anything my mother would be ashamed of me so I don't really have a much of a choice lol.
Gold isn't a sign of luxury or of being rich, it's the standard for the whole community. Regardless of whether you're rich or poor, you still wear gold.
