If you can't understand someone, don't say "What!?" as it is

too direct and can be impolite. Instead try "Pardon?" or "One more time please"

    Actually... it depends on the region. In Toronto, I hardly ever hear anyone say pardon or one more time please. In causal conversation, people tend to use “what?” more, or “excuse me “

    @AnnJema excuse me is considered polite, "what" is fine if you're comfortable with the person but shouldn't be used for people you don't know well.

    I feel like “excuse me” is universal, but “pardon” is not as common in North America as it probably is in the UK. I’ve also noticed that, at least in the States, people sometimes say “say that again (please)?”. I’d have thought it was a bit too direct if not because I always hear people use it at work (especially in zoom meetings since the pandemic happened🤔)
