you hear a difference in my accent?

I visited London for the first time in 2007. This was, of course, before Brexit, Boris Johnson, and the tanking of the British pound. I was 18 had just graduated from secondary school in the south of France. And, before returning to America, I decided to stop by, as my father had some contacts there.

The moment I arrived in London, everything appeared to be large. I felt like a boy from the countryside visiting the capital for the first time. It was like the main character in Soseki’s novel Sanshiro, who moves from the country to Tokyo to attend the prestigious University of Tokyo. As he is mesmerized by the bright lights of Tokyo, I too was dazzled by the endless illuminations of London’s skyline.
