🇬🇧🇬🇧 English expression Time!! 🇬🇧🇬🇧 (B2+ difficulty)

Throw somebody

 under The Bus

"you threw my friend under the bus to save yourself at school today."

To "throw someone under the bus" is an expression where someone blames a friend or ally for an error for personal gain or to do something harmful to someone else in order to gain an advantage for oneself.

"Jenny threw me under the bus today. she was talking in class and the teacher caught us but Jenny said I was the one who started the conversation when it was actually her!! "

"I am sure that my manager will throw me under the bus for the failed project. He'll probably take the credit for the successes and blame me for the bits that went wrong..."

"It's shocking to know how my Dad got thrown under the bus by his colleagues."

Now it's your turn using "throw someone under the bus" and I'll correct all your mistakes! :)

"Throw somebody under the Bus" in Russian will be like "Кинуть (обмануть) кого-то" если я правильно понимаю😄 That's a very useful expression😂

@Наташа скорее "подставить" друга или союзника для собственной выгоды

You mentioned that this is a B2+difficulty expression. I'm curious; What would you consider a C2 level expression? and based on what exactly you can determine how hard an expression is?...

@Margarita Hi Margarita! So usually it's used with people you know so your example might look a like like this"my parents will probably throw me under the bus if I started playing my drum kit during the week, as my neighbours usually end up calling the police due to noise restrictions" I hope that helps :)

@David Great question! so the ratings are usually listed on the Cambridge dictionary when I reference the expressions I post :) I have no idea why they rate some higher or lower ! I believe C2 are usually really subtle regional expressions (like the one I posted the other day) usually less common phrasal verbs and common idioms they grade at a C1 level but yeah sorry I can't answer how they come to this conclusion!

@Saúl Hey Saúl! That's a good example but we use need to change it slightly for the expression to work. Remember you are throwing someone under the bus to someone else. So "Jim and mario were sat together when Mario ate all of Maria's mangoes. When Maria realised and confronted them Jim throw Mario under the bus so that only Mario would be punished" :) good job!

I am not surprised that Johnny has thrown me under the bus because of his lack of responsibility, he always does the same.
