The past.

1. Talking about a PAST STATE that is NOT true anymore

: WAS/WERE

- When I woke up this morning, I WAS very tired.
- She WAS 20 years old last year.
- We lived in Australia when we WERE young.
- Where WERE you yesterday?
**Was: singlar — I, it, he and she.
**Were: plural — you, we, and they.

2. Talking about a SINGLE ACTION at a SPECIFIC time.

- Last week, we WATCHED a movie at the theatre.
- He COOKED for me yesterday.
- The day before yesterday, I HELPED my friend with her homework.
- This morning, we FOUGHT over the ps4 controller.
**Regular verbs: add “-ed” to make past tense.
**Irregular verbs: memorize conjugations.

3. Talking about a PAST HABIT/STATE that is NOT true anymore: USED TO + VERB

- He USED TO SMOKE, but he quit a few years ago.
- My mother USED TO walk to work, but now she drives there.
- I USED TO LIVE with my parents, now I live with my wife.
**Negative: Didn’t use to + Verb.

4. Talking about something that happened at an UNSPECIFIC TIME before now: HAVE/HAS + PARTICIPLE

- He HAS BEEN to Canada.
- The soccer game HAS STARTED.
- I HAVE STUDIED French.
- We HAVE EATEN all of Julia’s candy.
**usually used to “set the scene” before using (ir)regular past verbs for details.
**Negative: Hasn’t / Haven’t + Participle.
