Sometimes Americans do not use the verb "to

say" when they talk about what someone said, instead they will use the verb "to be" with "like"

Imma be like "no"
I am going to say "no"

He was like "yeah, I believe you"
He said "yes, I believe you"

She's always like "yeah, whenever"
She always says "yes, (we can do something) whenever (you want to do that)"

The teacher asked us if we did our homework, and we were like "of course"
The teacher asked us if we did our homework, and we said "of course (we did our homework)"
