Today, I went shopping at a Korean store. Whenever I go to this

store, I always talk to the owner in English. Today, as I was driving there, I was gathering up the courage to finally greet him in Korean — to say hello and ask him how he was doing. But when I got there, I totally “chickened out”. I couldn’t do it.

So for those of you who study really hard, but you still don’t have the confidence to speak, I feel you. But let’s keep working hard. We will find the confidence soon. ☺️

Use the very common idiom — CHICKEN OUT!

✔️to “chicken out” means to decide not to do something because you’re too frightened/too scared. “Chicken out” is used as a verb and the person who “chickens out” can be called a “chicken” (noun). This is commonly used and informal between friends, family members, etc.

✔️You might hear people say things like...
•I totally chickened out. I was so nervous. I couldn’t give my speech in front three hundred people.
•Stop being a chicken! Even the little kids are zip lining! You can do it!
•Are you sure you can jump from the plane? Do you think you will chicken out?

@가오누 That’s interesting. Thank you a lot for sharing!

@Oksana Yes, native speakers do use a lot of idioms. Sometimes they are such a natural part of our speech, we forget they are idioms. If you’re interested, I have shared many idioms on my moments. :)
  • Oksana

Currently, I am getting my bachelors degree on Linguistics and my teacher forces us to learn by heart plenty of idioms. Do native speakers often use idioms in their everyday conversations or not? 😁

I used to chicken out when I spoke to English native people, but now I am totally confident enough to talk with people in English.
  • Alex D

In my opinion, we aren't a native speaker of a second language, but we shouldn't be shy trying to speak with other! That's a great opportunity to improve your speaking skills.
  • Lay

I always chickened out when I was living abroad.

@원상희 I can help explain it to you. ☺️ If you ask for my help to correct you, I am not considered a red pen police. If you don’t ask for my help but I just keep correcting your grammar when you speak or fixing your writing when I see it, I would be a red pen police. ☺️
  • 원상희

No I'm not a student my sentence is wrong I learned that idiom 'red pen police' isn't ok in this situation?
  • 가오누 VIP

@おじいちゃん Yes, I can say a little more than that too— but I just get too nervous to say anything. I will work on this. ☺️
  • おじいちゃん

You can do it. Just say 안녕하세요.
  • 가오누 VIP

@원상희 oh no. Not the red pen 👮‍♀️. 😂 Are you a student?
  • 원상희

Haha 이런 상황, 느낌들을 공유할 수 있는 친구가 있어어 너무 좋네요~~ please massage to me I'm willing to help you ~~~and I need your help please be my red pen police ~~
  • 가오누 VIP

@원상희 Yes, I know no one will ever scold me. The issue is not other people, it’s just me. I just have to learn more so I can have more confidence in myself. But yes, you are right. ☺️
  • 가오누 VIP

    @Charlie 네, 감사합니다 Charlie씨. 🙏
  • 원상희

나도 알아요 그 기분... before I speak English I'm very afraid I might be wrong... but they say don't worry about that they can understand and nobody scolds you that you are wrong....
  • Charlie

Hope you find more courage in the next time to talk to him👍
  • 가오누 VIP
