Idiom of the Day:

“The whole nine yards”

This expression means

that you are fulfilling a task or duty to the fullest completion. You are not leaving any details out, and are working hard to ensure that success is the only option. The origin of this idiom comes from fighter pilots in WW2 who fired all of their bullets at a single target. The bullets were connected to chains nine yards long. Most Americans now would believe this idiom is about football or sewing.

“I turned in the job application, completed a personality questionnaire, wrote a resume’ and a cover letter, and prepared answers for the job interview. I did the whole nine yards.”

@Mona I ask for his help when he can. But it is no obligation. I sometimes receive 200-300 posts, comments, or messages asking me for help - just in one day! I am so overwhelmed. So he has been kind in helping when I do not have time.

@Umar Farooq idioms are common ways of expressing complicated matters in simple ways. For Americans, our English has an emphasis on efficiency. We want to be able to say more using less time. Idioms are a way of doing this.

@Caitlyn very nice! Your voice is very clear, and I can understand you well. I know you are probably nervous which is why you sometimes pause and hesitate. With practice you will speak more confidently and faster.
