If you “run out of steam

,” this means that you lack the energy or motivation to continue doing whatever it is you are doing. And, like a steam engine for a train, you slowed down until you stopped altogether. Maybe you “ran out of steam” while running a race and finished by walking. Or perhaps you “ran out of steam” learning English and took a break from Hello Talk for a while! It happens. We all need a rest once in a while.
