Ulysses by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Part 2 of 7.

Much have I

seen and known; cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honour'd of them all;
And drunk delight of battle with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and forever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!

    Ulysses reflects that he has traveled to so many places and seen so many things: different people, climates, cultures, governments and also been in many battles. He believes these have helped him become the person he is now as he says "I am a part of all that I have met". Yet he also reflects on the struggle of the type of life he has lived as the thirst for exploring new things never goes away. The more he has learned and seen, the more he wants to learn and see, forever. Finally he ends with reflecting on how dull it is to pause, to rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use! This means it is bad for us stay idle and do nothing. Our life is passing each second and only when we do the things we are supposed to will we shine and feel alive.

    can you explain sentences listed below for me if you please? “myself not least.” not least what? “yet all experience is an arch wherethro gleams that untravelled world whose margin fades for ever and forever when I move.” in a plainer way does it mean that his experience is an arch that shine through the the places he hasn't been to so that the world is all but known to him, even though he can't literally travel all over it? Why is the metaphor “arch” ? arch is the rainbow or something? that like a bridge leading him to see what lies yonder?

    @Gregory I searched online about Myself not least, it seems that it means he wasn't treated as insignificant by any of them. He was honoured, treated well by all he met. About the arch. I imagined it as a marble arch with a scene of the unexplored world beyond. So all experience is an arch and the more he sees the more he is able to see as the margin fades. I think he's also implying here that it is neverending and that he cannot see everything but as he sees more, more opens up to him.
