I have a culture question🇯🇵 I live in a condo (マンション) and recently

somebody moved in next door. I haven’t met them yet, but while I was out they put a present (hand soap👏🏻) and a message on my door. My question is, should I give a gift back?🎁 Or just say thank you when I see them?

    You need not to give a gift back😌 Just say thank you when you see them😊 Some people don’t say even thank you 😅

    You don’t give a gift back. Because new neighbor give a gift . soap or towel and so on.

    It's ok you just say thank you. I think you don't need to do like that. But it's my idea and it depends on person!!

    This is a greeting. When I build a house as well as a condominium, I greet the neighborhood.

    You don’t need to give a gift in return but just say thank you when you see them. Anyway, you have a nice neighbor. Some people hate the relationships with neighbors. When I moved to my present apartment, I put a gift on the door for both neighbors. Next day, one neighbor returned what I put. I felt emptiness.

    When you see them, you can say hello.😃 don’t worry you don’t have to gift back.

    Oh, that's called hikkoshi aisatsu, which is a greeting of moving in. It's a traditional custom. We usually give something being used for house chores to neighbors of both sides .😊

    So you don't have to give a gift back now. You should give him/her something like that when you will move to somewhere.
