I’ve noticed a lot of people learning English who do not completely

finish the words they speak. This is especially common when a word ends with a “t” sound.

For example, people might pronounce the word “patient” as “patien” and not put any emphasis on the “t” sound. It is important to at least acknowledge there is a “t” in the word. You do not need to treat it as another syllable but the sound must be there.

In another example, both words “statue” and “statute” have 2 syllables, however if you do not pronounce the third “t” in the word “statute”, you run the risk of saying “statue” instead. If that happens, only contextual clues will give the listener an idea of which word you’re saying.

    @Peter when you speak you should open your mouth more, and any movements of the mouth cannot be done at 50%. Keep working hard!

    @Zidane The flow of your English is great and your pronunciation is good. The plosives or oral occlusives sound too short - the letters “b”, “t”, “p” and “d” all should have more of a sound to them rather than just the stopping of air. Good job!

    @Jf the words “patient”, “emphasis”, “another”, “syllable” could do with some improvement but I can understand you. Your English is good, but making it flow more would improve it even further. Try to make the words flow instead of stopping and starting so much. Good job!

    @John Smith Yes. I have been struggling with my accent and pronunciation. Still need a lot of practice. Pronouncing chinese is a lot easier to me🙂.

    @Billy His English is good but he shouldn’t stress the first letter of each word so short. For example, the word “people” he says very quickly, the way Indonesians speak Bahasa Indonesia. But when speaking English we can slow the words down.

    @Billy hahaha actually, he is correct. The word is “emphasis”, not “emphasise”. Emphasise is a verb, whilst emphasis is the noun.

    @Mei Your pronunciation is clear and I could easily understand each word you said. My advice to you would be to practice speaking with more fluidity and smoothness, as it sounds very “stop and start”. Speaking faster and learning how to flow from one word to another would be helpful. 🙂
