Ryan’s Phrase Of The Day: Fill In

Meaning #1: Replace someone

short term/temporarily

Example: “If an employee goes on vacation they’ll need someone to fill in for them while they’re away.”

Meaning #2: Give information

Example: “Hey! I missed yesterday’s class. Can you fill me in?”

Meaning #3: Complete sth

Example: “When you enter a foreign country you usually need to fill in an arrival card.”

Phrasal verbs are very common and extremely useful. Many of them like “fill in” have multiple meanings and I believe are one of the big differences between English learners and native speakers.

I love the new format of sharing, it makes the phrase a lot more comprehensive. Thanks Ryan.

The first meaning of "fill in" is same with "step in". Can they be used interchangeably?
