Hello, all! 😊

I know 〜と呼ぶ means "to call someone ~" but what

does 〜として呼ぶ mean? I don't usually have problems with として but seeing it used with 呼ぶ is strange for me.

I read it in this passage:
受験勉強でせっかく英語をがんばったのに、それで終わったのじゃもったいないと思っていたんですよね。そんな時に地元で国際大学が開学したため、町がそちらの大学の学生さんを英会話講師として呼んでくれました。

"An international university opened in my town and the town (townspeople?) regarded the students as their English conversation teachers"???

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    @Daisy I reckon it’s much better.

    Does that mean that the students were asked to give English lessons? If so, does this translation work better: "The town invited those students (to the English lessons the town provides, I suppose) as their English conversation teachers."?

    国際大学が私の町で開校して、町は(町の住人は)生徒たちを英会話教師として、みなしました。 It’s a little bit wired...sorry...

    呼ぶ has two different mean. One is you know"call". The other one is "invite" That's why you are confusing. The passage's 呼ぶ is using as "invite"
