American Culture Post
In America, we often use the letter “k

” , which means ok or okay, when texting. Some examples are “I want to go to the store.” “K, do you need a ride?”
Or “The homework was page 182.” “K,thanks.”
Using k should be done only in casual situations, as it is technically slang.
However, never simply say “k” as one text. This is considered very rude to many Americans, and will sound like you are being dismissive to them. If you are going to use “k” in a text, make sure to use it with other words

In my country Singapore, usually parents will reply with "k". 🙊 We are used to it and don't find it rude. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But yes, if others reply us with "k", it will seem rude. :) The most friendly "ok" reply will be "okie" 😄

@캣 Kat T I've used this "K" recently during an argument with few English men as a reply to their huge message for which my comment got reported and removed. In India it's so normal not only to use the word "k" but we do speak English sentences in such trimmed English word style or slang. Like ; A : could you please tell me where can I find the Mia Mia Hotel ? ( Cld yo pls tl me whr cn a fnd d Mia Mia htl ? ) B : bla bla bla A : ok, thanks! ( k, tnx! ).

@Evie The criticism wasn’t rude, the way that you worded it was. American is a dialect and uses many words that other countries don’t. Apparently “k” is used in Britain as well. Good to know. And finally, I don’t exist in American bubble, and I resent that anybody would say that about me. I am very knowledgeable in many other cultures, but I can’t be responsible for knowing the culture and slang of every nation in the world. My lack of knowledge of British culture does not reflect my knowledge of culture as a whole. Maybe next time you want to criticize someone, you can do it in a kinder way. But I’ve said what I want to say, I hope you have a nice day :)

@캣 Kat T If you feel I'm being rude for pointing out the mistakes in many of your posts, then I'm sorry. American is not a language. If something is both said in Britain and America then that doesn't make it part of a culture because it's not exclusive. Which is the whole point of a culture. That's it. That's my point. Have a great day in your American bubble!

This is honestly a what the heck type moment. I would advise anyone learning English to not worry about slang as it is ever evolving and just a fraction of the language. @Evie I am perfectly knowledgeable about linguistics, my time on this app does not reflect my knowledge of this study. I was happy to hear other people’s criticism, because it was polite. However, you were very rude in your reply. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, it is in the American culture. It being in British culture doesn’t make it not American culture. I never said that it was strictly American. Maybe, you can learn to read critically and reply kindly
  • Evie 2021.01.27 00:24

    EN
    PT

@캣 Kat T Your post is misleading which is why other people have pointed this out. Learn from the feedback people are giving you. You are new to this app so maybe don't properly understand linguistics. Have a look at some other American profiles and see that they promote American slang as only things which are said with an American dialect e.g. "y'all". As you get older I'm sure your knowledge of linguistics will improve. Hopefully your knowledge of other cultures too.
  • 캣 Kat T 2021.01.27 00:19

@Evie English is the language but American is the dialect. I speak English in an American dialect or accent. Because I’m from America, I use American slang that is influenced by American culture. Because I’ve never really interacted with British culture or British people, I didn’t know that you guys used “k” the same way with the same connotation that we did. So, in order to avoid over generalizing one language and to teach people English from the perspective of an American, I titled this “American Slang Post” I never said other countries didn’t use it and I never said Americans created it. I simply said “In America, we often use the letter “k”... The way that I word my posts is very particular, so as not to offend anyone or make any false claims. Maybe next time, if you feel so offended by my posts, you can calmly tell me that British people use it as well, like many other people kindly did.
  • 캣 Kat T 2021.01.27 00:10

    EN
    KR

@Evie As I said before, “k” is not in the dictionary. It’s slang, and slang has a place in culture. It it’s in British culture as well, then great, we have something in common. But I’m sharing my culture through the aspect of an American. It’s funny, I actually said “American Culture Post” instead of “English Culture Post” because I know that not all English speaking places have the same way of speaking. So I was trying to be courteous and open minded. Maybe, next time you toe something out, you can do the same

@캣 Kat T Sorry but the English language is not American culture and the English language does not care if you haven't left America. Like...it's the English language. Sorry I guess, I don't make the rules.

@Evie would you then like me to assume that everyone else does what Americans do? I’m American. I’ve never traveled outside of America, unfortunately. I don’t know what other cultures do, so rather than assuming, I just say that it is American. I didn’t say it was strictly American. We just do it in America, therefore it’s American culture
