Ulysses by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Part 5 of 7.

There

lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail:
There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me—
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.

    Ulysses's ship is being prepared and he is getting ready to head out. He reflects on the loyalty of his mariners who have toiled with him through thunder and sunshine. Ulysses then reflects that old age should not stop anyone from striving and there is always something more you can do. He says everyone will die, but we can still do great work before that happens. Ulysses tells us to keep striving and never give up.

    The poem is beautiful. I liked how it sounds. Especially the part from “souls that have toil’d”.

    @Shamus Poems are always challenging because they always have new words for me, so it’s good to learn, but it’s difficult to keep motivated😅 However, your description helped understanding it and kept me motivated.:) Thank you😃
