Dutch colonists established control in 1667. Enslaved Africans were brought to work on plantations, leading to the rise of Maroon communities who resisted Dutch rule. Slavery was abolished in 1863 , and labor shortages led to the arrival of indentured workers from India , Java (Indonesia), and China. Independence Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands on November 25, 1975. Although peaceful, fears of economic instability caused many Surinamese to emigrate to the Netherlands before independence. Labor Migration After slavery ended, indentured laborers from India (starting in 1873), Java(from 1890), and China were brought to replace enslaved labor on plantations, contributing significantly to Suriname's ethnic diversity. Ronnie Brunswijk Ronnie Brunswijk, a former bodyguard of Desi Bouterse, led the Jungle Commando during the Interior War (1986–1992), fighting for Maroon rights. Despite a controversial background, Brunswijk became Vice President in 2020. Democracy Suriname initially adopted a parliamentary system after independence, but a military coup in 1980 led by Desi Bouterse interrupted democratic rule. The country returned to democracy in 1987. Chandrikapersad Santokhi became President in 2020, signaling stronger democratic practices.
