To commemorate my 365 day streak on HelloTalk, I wanted to share a HelloTalker story. (I've met this person, while I was using my previous HT account.)

One of the most heartwarming memories I shared with her was when she patiently taught me Hangul. It happened during our meeting in a cafe. I remember when she was writing sentences and waiting for me to read them out loud, so I could introduce myself and befriend someone.

As you can see, after 3 years, I still have that note. For me, it’s more than just a piece of paper - it's a symbol of her kindness and dedication in helping me connect with the Korean language.

Another cherished memory was when we met up to share a meal. She made a Korean pancake for us, which was so delicious and full of care. We sat at a small table with one plate between us. I’ll never forget the way she looked at me when I took my first bite, proud to share a piece of her culture with me. The warmth of the food, and even more so, the warmth of our companionship, made that moment unforgettable.

No matter where in the world she is now, I wish her all the best.

Do you have any special memories with your language exchange partners?

Recently, I saw a post about a man sending love poems to his girlfriend. But it turned out that all of those poems were written with the use of an AI. The girlfriend was not happy when she found out about using AI. Many people defended the man through comments. Others agreed, that his girlfriend was right to be upset. What do you think?

I’ve seen a lot of bullying portrayed in K-dramas, and it seems like a big issue in some of them. It’s hard to believe that bullying could be so common in real life. For the regular students, it seems like getting into a good university would be really tough if you were involved in bullying someone... Moreover the celebrities get "canceled" if they’re caught up in such allegations.

So, how much of the bullying in K-dramas is based on reality? Does it happen as often as it’s shown, or is it extremely exaggerated for the sake of drama? Is this something that you ever saw or experienced?

This is a letter written by Kim Jeonghui to No Gwangdu, the magistrate of Jain-hyeon (now Jain-myeon, Gyeongsan, Gyeongsanngbuk-do Province), extending New Year's greetings and good wishes. Written in cursive script, it exhibits Kim Jeonghui’s style during his early 40s, prior to the completion of his renowned Chusache script. The strokes vary in thickness, with some executed with strong, forceful pressure and others with a lighter, more delicate touch, creating a unique sense of rhythm. These characteristics later became an important foundation for the evolution of his Chusache script.

My Christmas Outfit Journey Between England and Poland

Growing up in Poland, Christmas was always a special, formal occasion. I remember dressing up in a nice dress for Christmas Eve dinner with family. The holiday felt steeped in tradition, and the attire was a reflection of that. We’d gather around the table for a festive meal, and everyone was dressed up, even though the atmosphere was warm and intimate.

When I moved to the UK, Christmas felt much more laid-back. The focus shifted more towards comfort and fun. I traded my dresses for cozy, oversized Christmas jumpers. It was all about relaxation, comfort, and the lighter side of the season.

Now that I’m back in Poland, I find myself in somewhat bizarre mix between the two. This year, I'll be rocking a silly pair of reindeer slippers with a checkered dress.

It’s fascinating how clothing choices can reflect the spirit of the holiday and the culture of the country. What’s your Christmas outfit tradition?

What's your favourite Christmas tradition? Does your family has any unique traditions?

In my family, we do our best to visit the Museum of Christmas Ornaments every year.

Not only you can admire the exhibitions of various styles there - you can even decorate your own Christmas ornament too. But if you don't feel that art is your forte, don't worry - you can always purchase many lovely decorations from the gift shop as well.

Even tough it might feel weird to call it a Christmas tradition, since we usually visit this museum in October/November, it always makes me feel, as if I were transported to the North Pole 🤶🏼🎅🏻🧸🎄

Do you celebrate Halloween?

I took the picture below, when I was a Uni student in England. Only during that time, I would dress up and go to the Halloween parties. 🧛🏻‍♀️🦇

In Poland, Halloween is still a relatively new holiday. To be honest, it's not very popular to celebrate it, at least in small towns.

How about you? Do you plan to celebrate Halloween? Will you dress up? Or maybe you will just watch a horror film and eat some candy? 🧟‍♀️😱🍭🍬🍫Let me know in the comments ☺️

🏰Krzyżtopór Castle in Ujazd, Poland🏰

In the Świętokrzyskie Province, in the village of Ujazd, one of the most original Polish monuments is located – the ruins of the Krzyżtopor castle. The enormous, extremely original defensive residence of Krzysztof Ossoliński is characterised by splendour. The building is an extraordinary monument to the founder and his times that excellently depicts the social significance and wealth of Polish gentry. For centuries, the object has been stirring the imagination of visitors. It's no wonder then, that the group ENHYPEN filmed Bite Me mv in this location.

Which Mindset Do You Have, Eastern or Western?

(Docu-prime: The East and West) was aired on Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS). The program delves deeply into the differences in Eastern and Western ways of thinking and the principles of their thinking, starting from those simple questions. Through various street experiments conducted in Korea, China, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom, it attempts to convey profound content that we normally have difficulty accessing, in a more easy and fun way.

So, let's try it! I will post the answers with explanations in a comment section 👇🏻

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2024 is awarded to the South Korean author Han Kang, “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

She has a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, and in her poetic and experimental style has become an innovator in contemporary prose.

You can read my thoughts on one of her book "The Vegetarian" (채식주의자) here:

## 23. 10/9/2024

Today's Hangul Day reminded me of the story of a very special student at the Gusan Elementary School - 76-year-old MyungGae Lee. Due to her circumstances, she didn't receive the education she deserved. It's not the first such story I encountered. The tradition came with a heavy toll on daughters, many of whom were expected to stay home, looking after younger siblings while the parents toiled outside. But nowadays many of those Grandmothers learn how to read and write. They can finally fulfill their dreams of writing back to their children, read their banking history or simply check the destination of a bus. Those are actions that probably most of us do everyday without thinking too much of it.

Although I cannot read and write in 한글 well, I'm greatful everyday that there are languages in which I can write and read comfortably. I hope that one day, I will be able to do the same using Korean. This day is a reminder for me to not take those skills for granted.

## 24. 10/6/2024

I picked up this book from the library shelf somewhat by accident - my eye was drawn to the name "Shin Kyung-sook" on the cover. Initially, after reading the summary, another story came to mind - the 'Memoirs of a Geisha'. It turned out, however, that 'Dancer' is a much more complex and multidimensional novel than 'Geisha'.

The story of 리진, a young Korean court dancer, weaves in the history of Korea at the dawn of a new era. Although the author notes in the afterword that this is not a historical novel, we can get a glimpse into the country's past.

And so, yes, we have the story of a young girl given away as a child against her will to become, de facto, a slave; we have Far Eastern traditional art and culture. The main character also, breaks out, or rather is broken out, of her slave position, thanks to a man who has a high social standing.

And this is also what the story of 'Geisha' is mainly based on as the main theme of the book. However, on this level, the novel 'Court Dancer' is only just beginning - it is only the surface layer (however incredibly interesting and engaging), which is only a pretext to reach deeper. From the topic of the history of Korea and its complex political situation at the turn of the century, to the issues of supposed freedom and tolerance that France boasted at the time, to issues of love and attachment (to another person, to one's homeland), issues of identity, women's rights in the world, the issue of the seizure of works of art and culture by European countries, ending with the impossibility of living in two worlds at the same time.

The descriptions were as beautiful as the ephemeral dance of the titular Dancer. I am entranced and somewhat do not want to reach for other books in order to not lose this beautiful feeling that has remained like a butterfly sitting softly, it's wings shining in the spring sun.

## 26. 9/17/2024

As the 추석 time is upon us, I hope that you are having happy and pleasant Thanksgiving holiday season.

But I also wanted to take some time to acknowledge, that although the holiday is meant to be a happy reunion of family members and relatives, it also can take its toll on the mental health for a variety of reasons.

The occasion might appear joyous from the outside, but it is nerve-wracking and stressful to many who suffer emotionally in various situations.

Women in conservative family settings are silently obligated to cook holiday food and wash dishes for many people. Relatives who have not seen each other for some time make provocative comments out of misunderstandings, resulting in arguments. Travelling with the family and spending time 24/7 suddenly grates on the nerves. Young adults who are unemployed or unmarried get disturbing criticism from elders. Spending this time at work, instead of family-time can also be painful. All these scenarios and more build up psychological tension.

If you are finding this time of year difficult and are suffering with the holiday blues, I wanted to reassure you that it's common to find things hard at this time. Despite those hardships, I hope that you can focus on the present moment and let go of any worries or concerns about the past or future and find happiness and well-being during this festive time.

## 27. 9/17/2024

The gisaeng (기생) —often referred to as kisaeng—were highly-trained artist women in ancient Korea who entertained men with music, conversation, and poetry in similar manner to Japanese geisha.

Contemporaries denounced them as no’ryu’jang’hwa (노류장화/路柳牆花), trees and flowers that grow along the road and on walls that are easily plucked by anyone, i.e., women of easy virtue. In the same breath, they were also praised as hae’eo’hwa (해어화/解語花), beautiful flowers that could understand words and speak poetry. These flowers illustrate the contradictory nature of the gisaeng of Old Korea.

“For many centuries, they formed both the most prestigious and most despised social group in Korea,” but it was in the strict confines of Joseon society that this dichotomy was most pronounced.
