Yesterday I was anxious, just like on the exam day. Today I’m sad, not because I couldn’t pass, but because I know I should have pushed myself a bit more while preparing. I fully understand my preparations were not enough. I kept jaywalking here and there across various things in Japanese instead of focusing. My study time was not enough at all. On one side, I’m happy that my listening scores improved. But on the other hand, I lost 4 marks in grammar and vocabulary, and I’m angry at myself for that. I should have worked a little more on grammar and vocabulary. A horrifying incident has shaken me - a 27-year-old man was brutally murdered by a 24-year-old in Tamil Nadu, India. It’s being called a “caste honor killing.” For those outside India: caste is a rigid, birth-based hierarchy rooted in Hindu religion, dividing people into so-called superior and inferior groups. It has justified systemic discrimination, exclusion, and violence - especially against those labeled as “lower castes” or Dalits. The victim, an IT professional working in an MNC, was in love with a woman he had known since childhood. Their childhood friendship turned into love. But the accused - her brother - who knew him since childhood, disapproved of the relationship because the man was from a so-called lower caste, while they belonged to a so-called upper caste. This seems like a planned murder. Shockingly, both of the accused’s parents are working in the government police department. This isn’t an isolated incident. Crimes like this happen far too often in India - in the name of caste and religion. We proudly call ourselves secular. We claim Tamil Nadu is different from the North - that we don’t discriminate or keep caste surnames. But deep down, our society still holds cruelty - killing someone simply because of their caste. We have failed as a society once again. I often share the good things about being from Tamil Nadu and India. It’s heartbreaking that such hatred thrives in the 21st century, while we talk about AI, space exploration, and the future of humanity. I can’t ignore this painful side of my country. I still hold on to a little hope - that we, as a people, develop basic civic sense and humanity. Until then, I share this quote from Babasaheb Ambedkar in Annihilation of Caste: "Turn in any direction you like, caste is the monster that crosses your path.
