Radiant, fierce yet graceful, shimmering with transparent light. Until then, my life had been dull, just carrying water. But that day I realized: even containers could be beautiful. I trembled. From then on, nothing else mattered. I dreamed of holding crimson wine, shining with elegance. I was sixteen. Many summers have passed. Now, my season is ending. I always knew—I’m only a paper cup. At a campsite, a reckless girl scribbled her boyfriend’s name on me, a boy she’d known for only a week. Wrinkled in careless hands, my body aged in an instant. Smoke, grease, beer, ink, even the saliva of a clumsy kiss— all of it tore my dreams apart. The sunset glowed like the liquid in that glass I once adored. How hateful, how pitiful I felt. I’m twenty-two now. My ideals are far away. The drunk couple left me on the table. I looked up— stars scattered like jewels from a toppled chest. The Milky Way appeared, as if celebrating the miracle of life itself. My longing for the glass felt small, almost laughable. I chuckled. By the water’s edge, the galaxy shimmered in reflection. A frog leapt in, ripples spreading. I stared, as if for centuries. At twenty-two, I saw the night sky for the first time. The cool wind carried me to the ground. Spilled beer seeped out, ants swarmed. This must be my final scene. Paper cup… I’m just a paper cup. The dream of the glass fades to mist. An ant climbs my soggy side, and strangely, that tiny sound feels soothing. Paper cup, paper cup. For example, I become a fictional art therapist and ask fictional people with mental problems to draw something that expresses what’s inside their minds, then analyze their works.
