La derivación semántica causa diferencias útiles: a menudo el árbol y su fruto tienen géneros distintos porque son palabras distintas: el naranjo (árbol) — la naranja (fruta). el manzano — la manzana. la higuera (árbol) — el higo (fruto). Historia y préstamos: el género viene de la etimología (latín, árabe, lenguas romances, nombres indígenas); por eso hay irregularidades y variaciones regionales en algunos casos. Nombres científicos (Latín): para evitar ambigüedad se usan los nombres binomiales (Quercus robur, Pinus sylvestris). Esos no cambian con el género del español y son la referencia técnica. Ejemplos rápidos: Masculinos: el roble, el pino, el olivo, el nogal, el laurel, el abedul. Femeninos: la encina, la palmera, la acacia, la higuera.
