Under King Hayam Wuruk (1350–1389), Majapahit reached its golden age, stretching its power over Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Maluku, the Malay Peninsula, and even influencing southern Thailand and the Philippines. Among his greatest feats was defeating the remnants of the Mongol-Yuan fleets, once feared across Asia, thereby securing Majapahit’s supremacy in maritime trade routes. He also subdued powerful regional rivals, including the Kingdom of Sunda in the fateful Battle of Bubat (1357), which, though tragic, solidified Majapahit’s dominance over western Java. Through diplomacy and conquest, Gajah Mada achieved what no statesman before him dared to imagine: forging a united archipelago.
