On this day, Iranians grab their picnic baskets, head to parks, mountains, or rivers, and spend the day eating, playing, singing, and dancing. In some areas, especially among Kurds and Turks, people take it to another level with energetic folk dances that turn the parks into mini festivals! There are also some cool traditions—like throwing Sabzeh (sprouted greens) into water to wash away bad luck and tying grass knots while making a wish (especially for love and happiness). Why the 13th? In ancient Persian beliefs, 13 was considered unlucky, so people would leave their homes to keep bad luck away. But honestly, it’s just an awesome excuse to party with nature and welcome spring! This table includes seven items, all of which start with the Persian letter "S" (س) and each has a symbolic meaning. The Seven Main Elements of Haft-Seen: 1.Sabzeh (سبزه, sprouts) – Symbolizes life and new beginnings. 2.Senjed (سنجد, oleaster fruit) – Represents love and wisdom. 3.Sekkeh (سکه, coins) – Symbolizes wealth, luck, and prosperity. 4.Sir (سیر, garlic) – Represents health and protection from illness. 5.Sib (سیب, apple) – Symbolizes health and beauty. 6.Somagh (سماق, sumac) – Represents a fresh start and the sunrise. 7.Samanu (سمنو, wheat germ pudding) – Symbolizes strength and blessings. Other Traditional Items on the Haft-Seen Table: • Quran or Hafez’s poetry book – For blessings and good fortune. • Goldfish – Symbolizes life and movement. • Mirror – Represents clarity and self-reflection. • Candles – Symbolize light and hope. • Colored eggs – Represent fertility and new life.
