Recently I’ve seen several posts from women saying they were sexually harassed through messages by East Asian men on this app — mostly Chinese men, and a smaller number of Korean men. A few foreign friends of mine have told me similar stories. I honestly feel ashamed about it. Isn’t HelloTalk supposed to be a language-learning app? I have two messages for anyone who reads this: To men: Please pay attention. When you do these ugly things, you’re not only hurting a woman you’ve never met — you’re also making your nationality obvious. People can see where you’re from, and your behavior brings shame on your country and on East Asian men as a whole. To women: Don’t put East Asian men — especially Chinese men — on a pedestal. They are not automatically synonymous with chivalry or gentleness. In fact, many have warped attitudes. The men who harass women tend to be over 30 and often use some weird photos as their avatars. They send you massage. Once you reply them, they will start trying to harass you. They’re either unable to marry because of poor personal circumstances, or they’re already married and still use social apps to do disgusting things for a thrill. If you see someone who fits these patterns, don’t reply — it’s the best way to avoid being harassed
