Before going to Kamikouchi, I thought that monkeys were ferocious animals. When I went to see monkeys on the west coast of Izu, I was told to take care of my bag, because the monkeys would take it and run up the mountain. When I saw them by the road in Nikko, they had hostile, scary faces, trying to get snacks from people. 上高地に行くまで、私は猿は獰猛な動物だと思っていました。伊豆の西海岸に猿を見に行ったときは、猿は人間のバッグを取って山の上に持っていってしまうので、絶対に離さないようにと言われました。日光の道路脇で見たときも、彼らは敵意むき出しで怖い顔をしていて、人からお菓子をもらおうとしていました。 In Kamikouchi, monkeys didn’t seem to pay attention to human, and they were running past us. Their faces are really peaceful and cute. According to our guide, because it is strictly prohibited to feed them in Kamikouchi, they don’t expect to get any food from humans. It’s amazing how human activities can even change their expressions. 上高地では猿は人間に全く関心がない様子で、ただ私たちのそばを走り抜けていきました。猿の顔はとても穏やかで可愛かったです。ガイドさんによれば上高地では餌付けが厳しく禁じられているため、猿は人間から食べ物がもらえるとは思っていないとのことでした。人間の行動が彼らの表情まで変えてしまうんですね。
