Let’s read the Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson . chapter 1️⃣There no one left Mary Lennox was a very thin, sickly-looking girl with a sour face. She had always been angry and spoiled, and no one really liked her. Her parents were rich English people who lived in India. But they didn’t care much about her. Her mother was beautiful and loved parties. Her father was always busy with work. They left Mary with Indian servants who gave her whatever she wanted, just to keep her quiet. Because no one said no to her, Mary became rude, selfish, and angry. She didn’t learn how to be kind or play with other children. She believed she was better than everyone else. One morning, when she was about nine years old, something strange happened. She woke up feeling lonely because her servant didn’t come to dress her. Usually, someone helped her with everything—dressing, washing, even eating. She shouted for the servant, but no one came. The house felt quiet and empty. After a while, another servant came in, looking afraid. Mary asked, “Where is everyone?” But the servant didn’t answer her properly. She just muttered something and ran away. Later that day, Mary found out the truth. A terrible disease had spread through the house. Many people, including her parents, had died from the illness. Everyone who worked in the house had either died or escaped in fear. Mary was left completely alone.
