Justice Beyond Revenge The idea of "an eye for an eye" comes from ancient legal systems, emphasizing equal retaliation for wrongdoing. While this principle aimed to establish fairness, it often led to endless cycles of revenge. As Mahatma Gandhi wisely said, "An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind." Modern justice systems have evolved to focus on reparation and rehabilitation rather than pure punishment. Reparation seeks to repair the harm done, helping victims recover and ensuring that offenders take responsibility for their actions. Rehabilitation, on the other hand, aims to change offenders' behavior, giving them the opportunity to reintegrate into society as better individuals. A society built on revenge remains trapped in conflict. But when justice prioritizes healing over harm, it creates a future where people learn, grow, and coexist peacefully. True justice is not about making others suffer—it’s about making things right.
