I'll tell you Japanese "lol"

you can simply use 笑 or (笑) as lol
In Japanese, laughter is 笑い.
and we pronounce 笑 as "wara" so you can use "w" as 笑, though 笑 is softer in my opinion.

You can multiply them like 笑笑笑 or www
What is more, someone thought "www" looks like the grass, so we use 草, the Kanji meaning grass, as "www"

There are some extremists who condemn people who use 草w at the same time because 草 comes from w. Some say we must not combine them. Others never mind, though.

There's slight difference between 笑, w and 草
It depends on people, but if I am chatting with a girl I like so much that I feel like not being hated by her, I never use 草 and avoid w. I will use 笑
The point is that when i like her so much that i don't wanna be hated. If I get along with her and we are good friends, I don't hesitate to use 草 and w.

This is MY opinion, but I think most Japanese agree with me.
