The Secret Garden đżâď¸đľđż Letâs read chapter 2 Mistress Mary Is Sent Away After her parents died, people didnât know what to do with Mary. A group of soldiers found her in the empty house in India and took her to stay with another family for a while. But nobody wanted to keep her for long. She was difficult and never smiled. Soon, it was decided that she would be sent to England, to live with her uncle, Mr. Archibald Craven. He owned a large house in the countryside called Misselthwaite Manor. Mary didnât remember ever meeting him. People said he was strange and always sad because his wife had died many years ago. Mary didnât care. She was angry about leaving India and didnât want to go to a cold, gray place. When she arrived in England, the air felt damp and cold. She wore a thick coat, but still shivered as she was taken by train, then carriage, to the manor. A woman named Mrs. Medlock picked her up from the station. She was the housekeeper at Misselthwaite Manor. She didnât seem friendly, but she told Mary some important things. âYour uncle wonât see you much,â she said. âHe travels a lot and doesnât like people around him. The house is huge and full of locked rooms. You must not go wandering around alone.â Mary didnât say anything. She was too tired to argue. When they arrived at the house, it was already dark. The building was old and full of shadows. Mary was shown to a small room, where a servant named Martha helped her settle in. Martha was talkative and different from the Indian servants Mary was used to. âYouâll have to dress yourself here,â Martha said kindly. âWe donât have servants to do everything.â Mary frowned. She didnât like the sound of that. But for the first time, someone spoke to her like a real personânot just like a spoiled child.
