Eyüp Sultan Mosquie 🌙 Eyüp Sultan Mosque is a mosque in Eyüpsultan, a district of Istanbul located on the shores of the Golden Horn, outside the Walls of Constantinople. The complex also contains the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the standard-bearer and companion of the Prophet Muhammad of Islam. As a companion of Muhammad, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari is highly respected by Muslims and the site of his tomb is of special importance. The tomb is located on the north side of the courtyard opposite the main entrance to the mosque's prayer hall.There are sacred relics believed to belong to Muhammad inside the tomb, and various inscriptions by Ottoman sultans Ahmed I, Mahmud I and Selim III indicating the sanctity of the place. Due to the extreme sanctity attributed to the mosque, many important Ottoman statesmen and members of the dynasty chose to be buried close to the mosque; Suleiman I and Ottoman Grand Viziers who served under Selim, Sokollu Mehmet Pasha, Siyavuş Pasha, Lala Mustafa Pasha who conquered Cyprus on behalf of the Ottomans in the 16th century, Âdile Sultan and Mihrişah Sultan. A little further away from the tomb, on the side facing the Golden Horn, is the tomb of Mehmed V, designed by Architect Kemaleddin Bey in 1918. Behind the mosque are the Eyüpsultan Cemetery and Pierre Loti Hill. In modern times, boys who are about to be circumcised are sometimes brought here in their special clothes. In addition, the municipality organizes mass circumcision ceremonies for the children of families in need. It is also a place where people gather to break their fast during Ramadan, and many people prefer to have picnics in the mosque's courtyard. Eyüpsultan Square and the mosque are a pilgrimage point for those coming from all over the country throughout the year.
