Things are fine here in general, although today hasn’t been the best day to be honest. So, Josh came home from school today all bright-eyed and excited at the prospect of going to Guatemala for a month next summer after his exams. It's some sort of “voluntourism” thing that the school is involved with. They’re supposed to spend half the time working in an orphanage and then they go off into the rainforest to help with a conservation project. He was so excited about it. He’d really been sold this idea hard by the Sales rep from the travel company. I can see why it appeals to him. It all sounds amazing, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and it’Il look great on his GV. One small detail — it costs £3000 per person! And aside from the question of money, I find a lot of this quite troubling. I’m not really comfortable with the ‘saviour’ model of white middle-class kids going off to save the poor children of the world. And is it the best way to support the rainforest to fly there and cuddle the monkeys? Anyway, I totally burst his bubble and we ended up in a massive row. I know I handled it really badly.
