上げ劣り became really popular on SNS with an explanation that it means “to look worse after a haircut”. It became known as one of those “cool untranslatable Japanese expressions”. But if you look it up in Japanese, it seems to be something completely different? I’m wondering, is it actually ever used to mean that someone looks worse after a haircut? Or was it just a case of a mistranslation that caught on and spread too far?
