I'm currently reading Indonesian childeren's stories, and gave it a try translating it into English (and Korean) for practice. Please let me know if there are any parts of the story feel a bit off or unnatural. p.s. kancil means a mouse deer in Indonesian but I just kept it as kancil here. Kancil and Crocodiles(1) In the forest, there lived a kancil. She was well known for being extraordinarily clever and quick-thinking. Besides, she was also recognized by other animals in the forest for being very kind. She also loves to help her friends, and her kindness made many other animals want to be friends with her. One sunny day, kancil spotted her favorite fruits across the river. However, the current was quite strong at that time and she hesitated to cross the river. She thought hard about how to get to the other side. She finally came up with a great idea. She saw several crocodiles swimming in the river and she decided to ask for their help. But one crocodile called out to kancil and said, “Hey, Kancil! What are you doing on the riverbank? Are you getting ready to become our lunch?”, she laughed. But, this clever kancil came up with another plan to trick crocodiles so she could cross the river. “Crocodiles! I have great news for all of you. The Forest King has ordered me to count how many crocodiles are in the river because she wants to treat you all to delicious meat dinner!” Kancil said briskly. (Korean) 숲속에 작은 사슴 한 마리가 살고 있었어요. 깐찔은 총명하고 생각이 빠르다고 알려져 있었어요. 숲속의 다른 동물들도 그의 친절함을 널리 알고 있었답니다. 깐찔은 언제나 기꺼이 친구들을 도왔고, 모두가 그와 친구가 되고 싶어 했어요. 어느 화창한 날, 사슴은 강 건너편에 자기가 가장 좋아하는 과일을 발견했어요. 그런데 그날은 물살이 너무 세서, 강을 너려니 좀 망설여졌어요. 깐찔은 어떡하면 강 건너로 갈 수 있을지 곰곰이 생각했지요. 결국 좋은 생각이 하나 떠올랐어요. 강가에서 수영하는 악어 몇 마리가 눈에 띄었고, 깐찔은 그들에게 도움을 청해 보기로 했어요. 그런데 한 악어가 깐찔을 부르더니 “어이, 깐찔! 강둑에서 뭐 하고 있어? 우리 점심 반찬이 되고 싶은 건 아니겠지?”라며 키득거리며 말했어요. 하지만 영리한 깐찔은 악어들을 속여서 강을 건너갈 또 다른 계획을 생각해 냈어요. “악어들아, 정말 좋은 소식을 가져왔어! 숲속의 임금님이 너희들 모두에게 맛있는 저녁을 대접하신다고, 강가에 악어가 몇 마리나 있는지 알아 오라고 명령하셨어.” 깐찔이 힘차게 말했어요.
